PARKSIDE PROJECTS: 3 at a time

05.27.2016

Since there are so many incredible projects going up in the Parkside District, we want to track the progress and focus on why they are important to us. Welcome to the neighborhood!

  1. Publix at 20 Midtown
It’s no secret that Publix coming to downtown Birmingham caused a major stir in the commercial real estate industry. An anchor tenant of this caliber reassures other retailers of a safe commitment to downtown locations. This has created a boom of activity in our growing Parkside neighborhood. “After Publix opens, we will see another intense round of further residential development. New residential units begets new amenities begets more residential development – a virtuous cycle will be in play in Birmingham instead of the opposite,” said Partner Derek Waltchack. We are looking forward to the tentative opening date, November 2016.

  2. Camp Smile-a-Mile Headquarters
Established in 1985, Camp SAM provides year round recreational experiences to young cancer patients, their families and survivors. Their new building is located in The Stockyard, at 1600 2nd Avenue South. The building’s proximity to Children’s Hospital will allow the patients on the oncology floor to see the building from their windows, which is why the exterior has been designed with that in mind. “It’s great to welcome another corporate headquarters to the Parkside District,” said Waltchack.BL Harbert provided a few more details about the building plans here.

  3. Hilton Garden Inn & Home2 Suites
Two hotels are quickly erecting on 2nd Avenue South and 18th Street in the former Children’s Hospital parking lot. Birmingham is in need of additional hotel rooms in the downtown area in order to accommodate visitors and attract large scale events to benefit the city. These new hotels will serve the growing business communities downtown as well as the medical district and entertainment venues.
